Day Three — California Route 1

Our Lady of the Highway had quite the workout on Sunday climbing (and descending) the hills of San Francisco with Jane acting as an ever-knowledgeable tour guide from the back seat.

Before we left San Francisco to head south, Googie tended to our Lady’s more intimate needs by adding oil and water. We were about 700 miles into our journey before we topped up her precious bodily fluids.

First stop south of San Francisco was a little town called Felton in Santa Cruz County where we picked up our first Moss Motoring Challenge point of the day, a covered bridge.

From there, we headed for the coastline and found it first in Monterey.

Through Carmel and onto Big Sur.

This is where Googie and the car showed me that they had bonded.

Gawking tourists slowed the travel day and needed to be passed.

After the sun went down, we turned left onto Route 48 and left the Pacific behind us. We are officially on the way home, headed East.

We finished the day in Bakersfield at a lovely downtown hotel called The Padre.

Total mileage so far 1067.2 miles. San Francisco to Bakersfield was a 355-mile day. Next stop Phoenix.
